Daniel
PRAYING TO GOD
we are all familiar with the story of Daniel. However, most Christians are
just curious about Daniel's prophecies. They want to know about the great image in Daniel
2, the image with the golden head, silver shoulders, brass abdomen, iron legs, and clay
toes. They also want to know about the beasts that emerge from the sea in Daniel 7. All of
the young people are interested in these matters. Although many years ago I spent a great
deal of time studying these things, I eventually came to appreciate other aspects of the
book of Daniel even more. Now I like the book of Daniel because in it I see a man who
prayed constantly and contacted the Lord continually (Dan. 6:10-11; 9:3-4; 10:2-3, 12).
According to Daniel 6, Daniel was preeminent among the governors and princes in the
kingdom of Darius. The other governors and princes were jealous and plotted against him,
seeking to destroy him. When Daniel learned of this, he went to the Lord and prayed. The
aim of the conspiracy of the one hundred twenty governors was to shake Daniel's
relationship with God. Nevertheless, Daniel opened his windows toward Jerusalem and prayed
three times a day. When Daniel learned from reading the prophecy of Jeremiah that the
seventy-year period of exile and captivity was soon to expire, he began to pray (Dan.
9:2-3). Then he received another vision and he prayed continually for three weeks until
the answer came (Dan. 10:1-3, 12). Daniel's prayer life issued out of a holy life. He
lived a holy life in the heathen land of Babylon. For example, Daniel refused to eat the
king's food, the food which was first offered to idols and then used to feed the king and
his people (Dan. 1:8). Daniel refused that food, and he enjoyed God very much. He enjoyed
God as the tree of life.

하나님께 기도함
우리는 모두 다니엘의 이야기를 잘 알고 있다. 그러나 대부분의 그리스도인들은 다만 다니엘의 예언에 대해 호기심을 가질 뿐이다. 그들은 다니엘 2장에 있는 거대한 형상, 즉 금으로 된 머리와 은으로 된 어깨와 놋으로 된 배와 넓적다리와 철로 된 발과 진흙으로 된 발가락을 가진 형상에 대해 알기 원한다. 또한 그들은 다니엘 7장에 있는, 바다에서 나온 짐승에 대해 알기를 원한다. 모든 젊은이들은 이에 대해 알기를 원한다. 여러 해 전에 나는 이런 것을 연구하기 위해 많은 시간을 소비했으나 결국 다니엘서의 다른 면을 더욱 귀히 여기게 되었다. 지금 나는 다니엘서에서 지속적으로 기도하고 계속해서 주님을 접촉했던 한 사람을 보기 때문에 이 책을 좋아한다(단 6:10-11, 9:3-4, 10:2-3,12). 다니엘 6장에 의하면 다니엘은 방백들과 총리들 중에서 탁월한, 다리오 왕국의 총리였다. 다른 방백들과 총리들은 그를 시기하여 멸하려고 음모를 꾸몄다. 다니엘은 이것을 알았을 때 주님께 가서 기도했다 백 이십 명의 방백들이 음모를 꾸민 목적은 다니엘과 하나님과의 관계를 흔드는 것이었다. 그러나 다니엘은 예루살렘 쪽으로 난 창을 열고 하루에 세 번씩 기도했다.
다니엘은 칠십 년의 방랑 후에 포로 생활이 끝난다는 것을 예레미야의 예언에서 알았을 때 기도하기 시작했다(단 9: 2-3). 그때 그는 또 하나의 이상을 받았으며 대답을 받을 때까지 삼 주 동안 계속 기도했다(단 10:1-3,12). 다니엘의 기도 생활은 거룩한 생활에서 나온 것이었다. 그는 바벨론의 이교도 땅에서 거룩한 생활을 했다. 예를 들면, 다니엘은 왕의 음식, 곧 우상에게 먼저 드린 후 왕과 그 신하들이 먹는 그 음식을 거절했다(단 1:8). 다니엘은 그 음식을 거절했고 하나님을 극도로 누렸다. 그는 하나님을 생명나무로 누렸다.
